(Adnkronos) – "The world of work gathers today at the Quirinale. The eightieth anniversary of the Republic prompts us to emphasize once again that work is its foundation. Your testimony, both individual and collective, is tied to the meaning of work, to the civic ethic that fuels the life of society, to the primacy of the individual. This primacy must be reaffirmed amidst the rapid transformations that risk encouraging the hegemonic claims of technocracies that sometimes use the same techno-sciences to gain power based not on democracy but on economic profit."
This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, during the ceremony at the Quirinale Palace for the awarding of the Stars of Merit for Work.
"Work: a symbolic place," the Head of State reiterated, "of human dignity, where everyone affirms their talent and professionalism, no one can be enslaved, and where everyone, with their own abilities, contributes to the common good, that of their family and their community."
“Power is organized into shared and democratic institutions to ensure the well-being of the entire society.
This is why work is a vehicle of democracy, it contributes to the quality of cohesion in a civil society,” said the President of the Republic. “Work, its culture, its ethics – and you are a perfect example of this – generates ideas, plurality, spreads well-being, builds relationships, and therefore communities,” added Mattarella.
The President of the Republic warned: “The hypothesized end of work – proposed as a solution by those who erroneously consider it a form of alienation – is a vision that can lead to a compression of freedom itself and to an increasingly dual organization of rights in society.
A society divided between a few rich Epulones and many, many Lazaruses”.
"This is therefore a decisive step. It is," the Head of State explained, "for our continent, Europe, called to defend the values of its civilization and support its social model. It can only do so through innovation—and by governing it—opposing attitudes according to which appropriate wage trends, rather than representing the dignity of the worker, are costs to be reduced to achieve competitiveness, while, on the contrary, investments aimed at replacing the workforce, regardless of their effectiveness, are welcome. This must be affirmed without any indifference to the necessary increase in corporate productivity. And for those who do not consider dialogue and the social dialectic characteristic of relationships in the world of work to be a constructive element."
