(Adnkronos) – The suspension of Schengen accession between Italy and Spain has been lifted. The Italian and Spanish Interior Ministers, Matteo Piantedosi and Fernando Grande-Marlaska, agreed after a cordial telephone conversation scheduled following the meeting between Prime Ministers Giorgia Meloni and Pedro Sánchez on the sidelines of the European Council. The decision, reached after a careful analysis of the situation, will be accompanied by enhanced information exchange to ensure the full security of the Schengen common area.
On September 15, Italy extended air and sea border controls with Spain for another 15 days. In response, the Spanish government also announced that it would extend checks on travelers arriving from Italy for another 15 days, until October 8.
The first stop came after the Spanish enclave of Ceuta was affected by a massive influx of migrants from Morocco at the end of July 2026.
On August 1, Italy temporarily suspended Schengen rules with Spain (with targeted checks at air and sea borders). This decision sparked considerable diplomatic tension with Madrid.
