In Rome, thousands took to the streets to participate in “La via Maestra ,” the national demonstration promoted by the CGIL and over a hundred lay and Catholic associations.

“Work, peace, environment, welfare, Constitution” is the slogan of the demonstration, with the procession already arriving in Piazza del Popolo, where the general secretary of the CGIL Maurizio Landini is speaking : “We are taking to the streets because people can't take it anymore, because there is a need to keep schools functioning, because there is a need to respond to the rising cost of living and because there is a demand for participation, for change, which also comes from the new generations.

And we believe that the country, the government, and parliament must learn to listen, and above all, must listen and give a voice to those who keep this country afloat with their intelligence and their work.”

The procession that started from Piazza della Repubblica has, as expected, already reached Piazza del Popolo, where the final rally is being held.

In addition to Maurizio Landini, Democratic Party secretary Elly Schelin and Five Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte were also present. Schlein said: " In this square, I find much of the spirit that led us together to win the constitutional referendum, which everyone thought we'd already lost. Instead, the extraordinary mobilization of civic forces and civil society made the difference. This is what we need. We need to build an alternative together and be able to reach out to these people who have mobilized. We want to build the alternative not alone , but with everyone who wants to contribute, and there are many of them in this square."
