Nicola Fratoianni and Maria Elena Boschi exchanged blows over the issue of a wealth tax. "We're calling for a tax on large fortunes, and it has to be there. We're not just calling for it, it has to be there because it's right to have a policy of redistribution in the face of unbearable inequalities that continue to grow unabated," said Fratoianni, leader of the Alleanza Verdi Sinistra, arriving at the CGIL's programmatic assembly.
"Redistribution must be a priority for anyone running as an alternative to the right. Then we discuss the formulas and the tools. We have always been very secular and very open, but the goal of redistribution must be part of the program. Also because achieving the many things we already agree on requires resources," he states.
"Like Riccardo Magi, I also have some doubts" about the wealth tax, says Maria Elena Boschi, a member of Italia Viva, who was with center-left leaders at the CGIL assembly.
"The largest assets are the easiest to move. The moment they leave the country, you also lose the taxation you have today. So let's think about what the most effective tools are," he continues. Fratoianni quickly retorts: "This story about them fleeing isn't true, let's think about it. We need to be brave, otherwise we risk not making it this time either."
“We have said that we will consult with all the forces represented in various capacities in Parliament to draft the program.
"It seems obvious to me that there's a discussion going on with them too. I've always said that rather than focusing on who sits down at the table to begin discussing the program, it's wise to focus on who will stand up together with a common program to cross the country," he added, referring to the dialogue with Italia Viva.
