(Adnkronos) – “It's always a moving experience, especially for those of us who accompany these people at sea, because we receive much more than we can give. Sailing is about sharing, unity, and communication: when you're on a boat, the important thing is to be together and experience the sea together.” With these words, Claudio Merli, president of the Marina di Salivoli Yacht Club, spoke at the eighteenth edition of “Thalas Mare & Vento – Il Grande Abbraccio,” the historic solidarity sailing event that every year brings together people with ALS, their families, volunteers, institutions, and citizens. The event is organized by AISLA – the Italian Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association – in Piombino, at the Marina di Salivoli Tourist Port, on the occasion of World ALS Day on June 21, under the international theme #ALSMNDWithoutBorders.
“On the occasion of the day organized with Aisla we will launch forty boats that will sail in a flotilla towards the Island of Elba.
This is an extremely important moment not only for the patients and their families, but also for all the associations involved,” Merli explained.
The president of the Marina di Salivoli Yacht Club then emphasized the importance of the "E' Stato Insieme" project, which this year involved young people from all over Italy. "Many of them didn't know each other, and seeing them bond immediately was truly moving.
At sea, they learned the principles of sailing, relying on each other. I followed their growth throughout the week, but the most beautiful thing was hearing one girl say, during the graduation ceremony: 'I no longer feel alone, I feel accepted.' I think that's more important than anything else," she concluded.
