(Adnkronos) – The Simpsons is offering a surprise: after 10 years, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is back. The 38th season of (arguably) the most famous cartoon in TV history featured a grand return in the episode "Treehouse of Horror Presents: The Revengening," which aired Sunday, October 18 in the United States. Apu, the famous Kwik-e-Mark supermarket manager, is back speaking after nearly 10 years of silence.
The character, a regular on the series, hadn't spoken since an episode in October 2017. Now, his voice is back with a twist. Variety points out that Fox didn't release the Halloween episode "The Revenging" in advance, and the producers adopted particularly secretive procedures. The actor who lent the character to the merchant, after a very long silence, was voice actor and producer Sunil Malhotra.
Apu's wife, Manjula, also regained her speech thanks to Janina Gavankar.
The Nahasapeemapetilon family will remain a permanent part of the series, as producer Matt Selman explained. "We love this character and wanted to bring him back in a smart, Simpsons-style way, while also allowing him to evolve. We're thrilled with Sunil's contribution to the role already, and we can't wait to see more of Apu in the future."
Apu was previously voiced by Hank Azaria. The character had faded into the background in recent years due to controversy surrounding the stereotypical portrayal of Asian, and particularly South Asian, salesmen.
