Gimbo Tamberi performed superbly on the third and final day of the Ultimate Athletics Championships in Budapest. The Italian Olympic champion dominated the high jump final. After finishing third in the Diamond League final in Brussels, and winning gold at the European Championships in Birmingham and the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, the 34-year-old champion from the Marche region triumphed with a leap of 2,37 meters, a world record for the season.
Second place went to American JuVaughn Harrison with 2,30.
The champion then put on his own show and after failing the last test at 2.41 he got up and celebrated with somersaults, a lap of the field, and a run towards the stands, climbing over as usual to go and greet his wife, his first-born Camilla and his fans.
Gimbo, who took to the stage with his traditional 'half-beard' (his nickname is 'halfshave'), then went to collect the trophy at the awards ceremony with the Italian flag on his shoulders and received all the applause when his name was announced. Then, as he raised the award, Gianna Nannini's "Bello e impossibile" resounded in the stadium.
The last time Tamberi jumped 2,37 was on June 11, 2024, in the final of the European Championships in Rome, watched by President Sergio Mattarella. The mark he achieved in Budapest is the same one he used to win gold (along with Mutaz Barshim of Qatar) on August 1, 2021, at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
“Thanks to all the fans, to my family, they pushed me beyond my limits: how can you not jump like this with a crowd like this?”, said Tamberi after the victory.
