Adnkronos (Adnkronos) – "Performing a genomic test directly on the biopsy would provide all the benefits of preventative chemotherapy, likely avoiding much more destructive procedures. Currently, this is not yet permitted because the test is not reimbursed." This was stated by Corrado Tinterri, professor of General Surgery at Humanitas University and head of the Senology Unit at the Breast Unit of the Humanitas Cancer Center in Rozzano, during the press conference "Breast Cancer: The First Two Years of Activity of the National Observatory on Genomic Testing," promoted by Abbott today in Milan.
“Most breast cancers affect patients who never receive preoperative chemotherapy,” the specialist emphasizes. “This means that for these women, in the presence of locally advanced cancer or lymph node involvement, we must perform extensive surgical procedures, even if we later discover that chemotherapy would have been indicated.”
Genomic tests therefore play an important role in the diagnostic process.
"This procedure is already operational in several European countries," Tinterri emphasizes. "In Italy, we will conduct a study to confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of using the biopsy test, with the prospect of achieving excellent results," he concludes.
