(Adnkronos) – “Vienna, I'm sorry to say goodbye like this. I love this tournament and I really wanted to challenge Matteo, with all of you in the stands. I felt something in the match the other night, but I wanted to give it my all. Today, however, I realized that continuing would have meant pushing too hard, and I had to stop.” Flavio Cobolli explained his injury and the tears after retiring in the round of 16 of the Vienna tournament against his friend Matteo Berrettini: “Those tears,” he wrote in an Instagram story, “were not tears of pain.
It was emotion, maybe a little stress, and the disappointment of having to leave the court when I just wanted to stay. I'll take all the tests and I'll update you as soon as I can. Don't worry, I hope to be in Paris. Thank you for all the love." The Italian tennis player is in full swing to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin, starting November 15th.
Cobolli's injury was immediately commented on by Berrettini: "I'm truly sorry for him. I've been through it so many times, maybe even too many. That's why I was so emotional. I know how difficult it can be. I know how much you want to be in Turin, and I know the last thing you want is to get injured just a few weeks before such an important event."

And again: “But let's hope it's nothing too serious. Today the idea was simply to get out on the court and celebrate the journey we're both on. We're both from Rome, we were two kids who played tennis on the weekends. I remember the day he chose tennis over football, and I remember his eyes, the same eyes he still has today, those of that kid who dreamed of playing on the biggest stages. And I think he deserves to be there, and I think he deserves the career he's building. So I truly wish him the best.”
