(Adnkronos) – "The Higher Institute for Environmental Research and Protection places prevention at its core." This was stated by Maria Alessandra Gallone, President of ISPRA, speaking at the fourth edition of the Adnkronos Q&A format dedicated to sustainable development, titled "Sustainability, the new key words," this morning in Rome at the Palazzo dell'Informazione.
“The first step is to overcome the idea that there are so many different sustainability approaches that they can simply be lumped together because there's only one sustainability; the issue of risk is just one.
There must be a comprehensive vision of development in which the environment, economy, society, and energy represent a deeply connected dimension, hence the principle of integral ecology,” Gallone begins.
“We must overcome the contradiction between the environment and economic growth that I now consider anachronistic, and we must support institutions like ours that make data monitoring, prevention, and attention to risks their objectives,” he continues. “With new technologies, we will be able to do increasingly more prevention in a fragile country.
We have a fundamental element at our disposal, that of knowledge: knowledge is the possession of fundamental strategic data; we cannot govern what we do not know; we cannot make effective choices if we are unable to measure their effects."
The goal is therefore to "make authoritative, independent, accessible scientific data capable of guiding decisions available to institutions, administrations, businesses, and citizens.
ISPRA has a series of tools dedicated both to our decision-makers in the broader sense, but also to local authorities and citizens. Such tools include the Idrogeo platform—which anyone can download even on their smartphones—which makes essential information on our country's hydrogeological instability accessible, offering a valuable tool for understanding risks and land-use planning. Therefore, "our goal is always to get there first, that is, before a risk turns into an emergency, before damage becomes irreversible, before a community has to pay the price for what we could have prevented."
"My message today is precisely to strengthen the dialogue between the research world and that of institutions, ensuring that scientific knowledge reaches decision-makers in a timely, understandable, and fully usable manner," he concludes.
