(Adnkronos) – "Early detection of patients with C3 glomerulopathy (C3G) or immune complex-induced membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (Ic-Mpgn), two ultra-rare kidney diseases, allows for their treatment and significantly reduces, if not almost completely eliminates, the need for dialysis. We have extremely effective therapies available that target the underlying mechanisms of the disease: they are a great help for us, but especially for these patients."

This was stated by Giuseppe Grandaliano, Professor of Nephrology at the Fondazione Policlinico Università A. Gemelli IRCCS, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, on the occasion of the closing of 'CL3AR', Sobi Italia's awareness campaign, created with the patronage of the Progetto Ddd Ets patient association and the scientific societies FIR, SINEPE, and SIP, to increase awareness of kidney health and rare kidney diseases in adults and children and promote early diagnosis.

C3G and Ic-Mpgn “fall within the framework of chronic kidney disease, they constitute a small portion of it – specifies Grandaliano – They are two extremely rare pathologies, but they have a significant impact on people's lives: 50% of patients are on dialysis 10 years after diagnosis, therefore they need replacement therapy.

Diagnosing these diseases promptly is truly important, but it's not a simple thing: they cause few symptoms and are rare, so it's up to the specialist to interpret clinical signs that are truly subtle and require laboratory tests."

Rare kidney diseases "are numerous and show clinical signs when it is perhaps too late to initiate adequate therapy," explains the nephrologist. "This awareness campaign is essential to encourage everyone to research these diseases."

We don't need particularly complex tests to screen for rare kidney diseases. A very simple test is more than sufficient. A very simple urine test allows us to suspect these diseases and then, if necessary, proceed with a slightly more complex diagnostic process and make a definitive diagnosis. But at the core is an absolutely simple test: a urine test.
