On Friday, October 23rd, in the early hours of the morning, a gas leak was reported on Via Casati, in the Oltrestazione area of Legnano. Initial indications indicate that the leak originated from a pipeline located in front of number 4, directly across from a residential building.
Some reports suggested the presence of a methane-like odor, prompting residents to contact emergency services.
The first intervention was activated immediately, with the arrival of the Legnano Fire Brigade followed by the Carabinieri of the Legnano Company , the State Police and the Local Police.
Joint intervention by law enforcement
Rescuers immediately secured the surrounding area, cordoning off the affected area and beginning operations to identify the exact source of the leak.
Firefighters deployed detection equipment to track gas concentrations, while the Carabinieri coordinated the evacuation of residents and traffic management.
Finding the vanishing point
At 8:22 a.m., technical teams were still at work, using infrared detectors to pinpoint the exact location of the leak. As a precaution, the entire Via Casati was closed to traffic, preventing access to private vehicles and public transportation.
Evacuation of 20 apartments
To reduce any risk of explosion or poisoning, authorities ordered the evacuation of twenty residential units, corresponding to approximately 20 apartments. The residents were escorted out of the building and transferred to temporary shelters set up by the municipality, with the assistance of volunteers and social workers.
Families received specific instructions on what to do, including closing doors and windows , avoiding the use of electrical appliances, and waiting for further instructions from emergency responders.
Road closure and next steps
Via Casati was closed to traffic all morning, with local police managing diversions and warnings of slow traffic. Once the leak is located, experts plan to intervene with a rapid repair, but the timing will depend on the complexity of the damage.
In the meantime, residents are advised to await official announcements and not to return to their homes until the danger has been completely eliminated. Authorities have emphasized that the safety of the entire area is their top priority and that all necessary measures will be taken to avoid further incidents.
