(Adnkronos) – “We find it in bad taste that Minister Giuli, Undersecretary Cannella, Tourism Minister Mazzi – through whom the PNRR Caput Mundi funds passed – the Lazio Region – which funded the programming with 2.35 million – and the parliamentary commissions, which oversee the national fund for live entertainment and, therefore, theatre, were not invited to the presentation press conference today.
"The majority of the bodies represented on the Board of Directors are represented. This is a serious institutional impropriety." This was stated by Federico Mollicone, President of the Chamber of Deputies' Culture Committee and National Head of Culture and Innovation for the Brothers of Italy party, regarding the press conference for the reopening of the Teatro Valle.
For Mollicone, "the reopening of the Teatro Valle finally brings closure to a long-standing and truly Pirandello-esque affair, restoring to the people of Rome and to Italy as a whole a fundamental part of our cultural heritage, where Luigi Pirandello's masterpiece 'Six Characters in Search of an Author' was first performed and which was enhanced by the greatest actors of the twentieth century, such as Franca Valeri, to whom the Foyer was dedicated and whom we paid homage to in the Chamber of Deputies last July."
The FdI representative, however, is keen to clarify the role of the Executive: "We recall that the reopening was not funded solely by the Municipality, but was made possible thanks to the concrete commitment of the Ministry of Culture, which directly contributed to the restoration of the property with €10 million from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP)—€1,5 million of which was specifically allocated through a development agreement—in addition to the more than €2 million allocated to the Teatro di Roma through the National Fund for Live Performances."
Furthermore, he continues, “we consider the homage in the renovation project to the illegal occupation of the Theatre and the citation of Mayor Gualtieri to be singular.
It was a veritable devastation of a protected public asset—which even prompted a judicial investigation, later shelved for reasons that were never fully clarified—based, among other things, on the lie of its closure and transformation into a supermarket. For historical reconstruction, I recall that it is completely false to say that the theater was closed at the time of the occupation: just search online and you'll find the entire program for the 2010-11 season, and—as President of the Culture Commission at the Capitoline Hill, and thanks to the work of Culture Councilor Gasperini—we had allocated €800 to secure the next season. It was effectively an operation carefully orchestrated by the "circoletto," which also had a multi-year economic return. We would hate for the left and the Democratic Party to have been affected by "Stockholm syndrome" toward social centers and the protagonists of that dramatic experience, which led to the closure of the historic building for years and much more expensive renovations. Responsibilities and crimes for which no one has ever paid." The President concluded: "Today we reopen a historic and symbolic place for Italian drama and culture, a home for training artists and audiences, and where the past generates the future. But history cannot be rewritten: the reopening of the Valle is a victory for legality, not the parade of those who for years have endorsed illegality to the detriment of the citizens of Rome."
