(Adnkronos) – Tesla has unveiled a sports car capable of flying short distances using rocket propulsion. CEO Elon Musk announced that the Roadster will enter production in 2028. During a presentation in Waco, Texas, the Roadster used cold-gas thrusters to fly over other parked Tesla vehicles, even performing a barrel roll (spin).
Musk confirmed that the car will go on sale.
The list price has not been disclosed, but to reserve the engine-equipped version in the United States a total outlay of $250.000 is required: $5.000 as an upfront deposit and the remaining $245.000 to be paid within 10 days.
Tesla's website only specifies that the first $5.000 is fully refundable.
During the demonstration, the Roadster accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour (96,6 km/h) in just 0,81 seconds. According to Musk, the production model will be even faster. The "Rocket" version, capable of flight thanks to additional thrusters, will be available exclusively by invitation from Tesla, as indicated on the company's website.
Tesla also warns that the vehicle is not permitted to be flown on public roads and that the “Rocket” version may not be available in all regions.
It's not yet clear how many units Tesla plans to produce with cold-gas engines. To reserve the "Performance" version, which doesn't have engines, a total payment of $50.000 is required.
All Roadster models are expected to feature a vacuum system designed to improve grip. During the unveiling, this system allowed the car to remain anchored to a ramp even while upside down.
Musk had presented a first prototype of the Roadster in 2017, initially promising the start of production for 2020.
