Women's tennis will have a new world number one. It's 27-year-old Kazakh Elena Rybakina, who came from behind to defeat Chinese qualifier Qinwen Zheng in the US Open quarterfinals, advancing to the semifinals of the US Grand Slam.

The new number one got the better of the Chinese 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, in two hours and 14 minutes, climbing in the WTA ranking to 8690 points, more than the maximum number of points that Aryna Sabalenka (8575) can reach in New York, who will therefore lose the top of the rankings after almost two years.

In the semifinals, Rybakina will face the winner of the match between American Coco Gauff and Russian Mirra Andreeva. Aryna Sabalenka will also be playing her sixth consecutive semifinal at the US Open, after her tough victory over Czech Linda Noskova, and will face American world number one Jessica Pegula.
