(Adnkronos) – Elly Schlein, Giuseppe Conte, Angelo Bonelli, and Nicola Fratoianni will meet on Friday. This will be an initial meeting between the progressive leaders, focusing on their program and more. The scope of the coalition, in other words, will also need to be determined. The criterion, according to parliamentary circles, could be representation in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
Where the components have multiplied to break the monstrous threshold of 6000 signatures per constituency required by the new electoral law for lists running for the first time. Aside from Italia Viva-Casa Riformista, which is exempt from collecting signatures, the centrist component 'Avanti Psi – Progetto Civico Italia' has been formed in Palazzo Madama, bringing together Enzo Maraio's Socialists and Alessandro Onorato's Civic Party, with the 'loan' of Senator Luigi Nave of the Five Star Movement.
In Montecitorio, a request has been made to form the group "More Europe-Democratic Center, United States of Europe" with Riccardo Magi, Benedetto Della Vedova, Bruno Tabacci (who was already working on behalf of Ernesto Ruffini and Franco Gabrielli), Luca Pastorino, and Aboubakar Soumahoro. Today, the Chamber's Bureau will meet to discuss Magi's request to form the new group.
But if the criterion were to be presence in Parliament, Maurizio Acerbo of Rifondazione would also be in the game.
In this case, it was the Democratic Party that "lent" a senator, Andrea Crisanti, to form the Senate component and assist Rifondazione in gathering signatures for the nomination of its lists. This move had already sparked discussion within the reformist Democratic Party. "If the way to strengthen the coalition is what we saw in the Senate, where the Democratic Party—the Democratic Party, not AVS and M5S—lent Rifondazione a senator to form the group, thus facilitating its entry into the coalition, we have failed to understand the mistakes of the past," Lia Quartapelle said Saturday at the Libertà Eguale assembly in Orvieto. These concerns have since erupted in the last few hours. "Celebrating October 7th is not a crime. There are those who praise Israel and those who praise Hamas. In a democracy, it's absolutely legal," Acerbo wrote on social media. These words sparked a storm.
"We even lent them a senator for this phenomenon," Democratic Senator Filippo Sensi commented on social media. Acerbo countered: "Sensi? It's hard to connect him to the left," explaining that there's an "instrumental controversy" going on against him, specifying that he's "against Hamas and against Netanyahu." This clarification isn't enough for Democratic Party Senator Sandra Zampa, who says she's "astonished that Rifondazione would ask the Democratic Party for help and, two days after receiving it in the form of a loan, allow themselves to name a longtime Democratic Party activist," namely Sensi, "as someone who shouldn't be in the center-left. Schlein should put an end to this spectacle." Andrea Orlando observes: "I think we can't incite Hamas just as we can't exalt the Decima Mas." Bonelli's criticism is also clear, as he didn't appreciate Schlein's move to support Rifondazione, a party that draws from a left-wing constituency like AVS: "Hamas was and is the worst enemy of the Palestinian people. I'm not a magistrate, I can't say whether it is a crime or not, but since I'm in politics, I can say that anyone who praises Hamas is a total idiot," says the Green Party leader.
