Family in the woods, kids return home for the weekend: what happens next?

A family in the woods has made a breakthrough after 11 months: the children will be able to spend the weekend with their parents unsupervised. This is the announcement from lawyer Simone Pillon.

After more than eleven months of waiting, a turning point has arrived for Nathan Trevallion and Catherine Birmingham, the couple known as the Palmoli Woods Family . Their three children will be able to spend the weekend in their new home with their mother and father, without the presence of anyone outside the family. Lawyer Simone Pillon describes this as a significant step toward reunification, while attention remains high on another similar case in Tuscany.

Family in the Woods: From Suspension of Parental Responsibility to a Legal Battle

The story began in late 2025 , when the Juvenile Court of L'Aquila ordered the suspension of Nathan and Catherine 's parental responsibility . The couple, of Anglo-Australian origins, had chosen to live with their children in an isolated farmhouse, without water or electricity, to pursue an alternative existence in close contact with nature.

Since then, a long legal battle has begun, marked by the children's separation and a gradual process of reconciliation.

A family in the woods: the important decision about their children after an 11-month wait.

" This is long-awaited news, and finally, after more than 11 months of waiting, it's becoming a reality ." With these words, lawyer Simone Pillon announced, as reported by Adnkronos , the acceptance of the parents' request, who will finally be able to spend an entire weekend with their children without external supervision.

" Mother Catherine and father Nathan are very happy ," added the lawyer, who stated that " the road to full reunification is now in its final stages ." Pillon also appealed to the press to respect the family's privacy.

The decision comes after months of gradual meetings, which resumed in September. The municipality has provided the couple with a new home free of charge, while their three children, six-year-old twins and their eight-year-old sister, are in a foster home in Vasto. On September 22nd, the children visited their parents' home for the first time; on September 29th, they returned to the Palmoli farmhouse, where they spent about an hour and a half with the couple. Under the new arrangements, the children will be able to stay overnight in their new home and return during the day to the farmhouse in the woods, where they will be reunited with the animals they lived with before being removed.

The mayor of Palmoli , Giuseppe Masciulli , also supported the need to move forward with reunification, emphasizing that the main issues raised against the couple have been addressed. " Now the housing problem doesn't exist, the schooling problem doesn't exist, the socialization problem doesn't exist ," he declared, also recalling the medical checks and evaluations by specialists.
