A year and a half after the launch of the new investigation into Chiara Poggi's murder , Pavia's prosecutor Fabio Napoleone spoke publicly, answering journalists' questions for the first time, going beyond official statements. The occasion was the inauguration of the academic year, at the end of which the magistrate spoke with the correspondent of Storie Italiane , the Rai 1 program hosted by Eleonora Daniele.
At the centre of the questions were the developments in the investigation into Andrea Sempio's murder of the young woman killed in Garlasco in 2007. When asked to indicate what the most solid elements were in view of a possible trial, Napoleone replied: " Now the trial will take place, it is important that all the arguments take place in the right place ."
These words seem to indicate the Prosecutor's Office's desire to proceed to the trial stage, leaving it up to the competent authorities to evaluate the respective reconstructions and the evidence gathered.
Garlasco: the confrontation with Sempio's defense and Stasi's position
The prosecutor also commented on the possible initiatives of Andrea Sempio's defense , who announced his intention to request the suspension of the preliminary hearing to avoid a possible conflict of judgments with the position of Alberto Stasi , already definitively convicted for the murder of Chiara Poggi.
Napoleone did not anticipate the prosecution's stance, but he also mentioned the possible moves of the defense of the victim's ex-boyfriend: " We will see what the defense of the convicted man will do ." He was referring to the motion for a review of the trial that Stasi's lawyers have announced they will file, but which has not yet been filed.
The magistrate also acknowledged the weight of the decision awaiting the judge for the preliminary hearing, but clarified that this is a responsibility that accompanies the work of all judges.
"We're moving forward": other investigations by the Pavia Prosecutor's Office
Another passage from the interview caught my attention. When asked how satisfied he was with the investigative work done so far, Napoleone replied simply: " We're moving forward ."
This statement could also apply to other investigations opened by the Pavia Prosecutor's Office and linked, directly or indirectly, to the Garlasco affair . These include the investigation into alleged corruption related to the previous Sempio investigation, as well as the investigation into the death of Giovanni Ferri, which occurred in Garlasco and has returned to the forefront following the authorization of new genetic tests.
The prosecutor's statement doesn't clarify the developments in these proceedings, nor does it anticipate any further investigations. However, it does confirm that the investigators' work doesn't end with the new investigation into Chiara Poggi's murder.
