(Adnkronos) – Another train accident has occurred on the Madrid-Seville high-speed line. As happened in Adamuz, in the province of Córdoba, on January 18th, a Renfe high-speed train and an Iryo train have once again been involved. At least 39 people are believed to have died in the collision between the towns of Los Yebenes and Urda in the province of Toledo.
Local authorities reported this to Sky News.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport, according to El Pais, explains that initial indications are that the Renfe high-speed train may have collided with the Iryo train. The impact caused two carriages of the second train to derail, plunging down an embankment.
The accident caused the immediate suspension of traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line. Staff from Adif, the railway infrastructure manager, operators from both companies, and paramedics responded to the scene. Witnesses described a dramatic scene.
The Renfe train involved in the accident had stopped and slowed down a few minutes earlier due to a traffic problem on the line.
