Adnkronos (Adnkronos) – A 15-year-old girl, believed dead by her family, suddenly awoke in her coffin during her funeral in Guatemala, to the astonishment of those present. The incident, captured in a video that went viral on social media, occurred in the village of El Jocote, where Yuleidy Ixcotoyac was pronounced dead by her father Abraham, an evangelical pastor, after losing consciousness while being taken to a medical center.
The man, unable to detect his daughter's heartbeat or breathing, was convinced she was dead. However, the 15-year-old had not been examined by a doctor, and no death certificate had been issued. The family therefore purchased a coffin and organized the funeral just eight hours after her illness.
During the wake, the young woman's mother, Lesvia Rios, noticed some movement inside the coffin.
"I kept saying she was alive, that she wasn't dead. While I was crying over the coffin, we opened the little window and she was moving, waking up and suddenly sitting up," the woman told local media, quoted by The Sun. To the disbelief of those present, the girl began speaking again and was helped out of the coffin by her family, while shouts of "Hallelujah" could be heard in the background.
The 15-year-old later described feeling a sharp pain in her chest before losing consciousness: "My heart started to hurt a lot, it felt heavy, and then everything went dark, as if I had fainted." Yuleidy, now conscious and recovering at home, said she "thanks God" she's alive. Guatemalan health authorities have not yet commented on the incident.
