(Adnkronos) – A Chinese man was found dead this morning in an apartment on Via Marini, in Prato's Chinatown. According to initial investigations, the victim was reportedly hit by multiple gunshots and his body was subsequently set on fire in an attempt to cover up any traces of the crime.
The alarm was raised after a small fire was reported around noon. Firefighters, who responded to put out the flames, discovered the body in the building's attic, a room that may have been used as an unauthorized dormitory.
The Carabinieri, the police, and investigators from the Flying Squad arrived on the scene, along with forensic specialists and the magistrate on duty.
The area was surveyed to reconstruct the events and gather evidence useful to the investigation. A fellow countryman of the victim was brought to the attention of investigators. According to initial information, the man voluntarily presented himself to the police station, declaring himself responsible for the murder. He also told investigators where to find the gun used, which he allegedly abandoned on the street.
His position is now being examined by investigators.
Among the hypotheses being considered is that of an argument over seemingly trivial matters. The suspect reportedly said the victim was filming him on a phone while he was taking drugs. This led to an argument, during which he allegedly threatened his fellow countryman with a firearm. The man's reconstruction of events remains to be verified. Investigators are also assessing the possible connection to another arson incident that occurred overnight in Soccorso, where a grocery store run by Chinese citizens was burned down.
