Adnkronos (Adnkronos) – She was following the hearse to her mother's funeral when a boulder broke away from the rock face and smashed through the roof of her car, killing her. The tragedy occurred around 1:30 PM on regional road 521, between Morro Reatino and Leonessa, in the province of Rieti.
The 66-year-old woman was traveling in her own car along with other cars that were following the hearse headed to her mother's funeral.
Suddenly, a large boulder broke loose from the rock face bordering the road. The rock struck the car head-on, breaking through the roof and falling into the passenger compartment. The impact was fatal: the woman died instantly.
After hitting the woman's car, the block of rock also hit other vehicles that were traveling on regional road 521.
Several people were injured.
Emergency responders and law enforcement responded to the scene. Investigations are ongoing to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the detachment and the accident.
