(Adnkronos) – Giuseppe Angiolini, known to all as Beppe or "Sugar," a leading figure in Italian fashion and an international reference for stylistic research and contemporary trends, has died. Born in Arezzo in 1952, he would have turned 74 on December 5th. He passed away at his home in Arezzo after a long battle with illness, without losing his courage, enthusiasm, or faith in the future.
With his passing, Arezzo loses one of the personalities who best combined civic identity, creativity, and international scope.
His entrepreneurial story began in 1978, when he opened a boutique on Corso Italia. From that first store, a project was born that would become a benchmark for cutting-edge fashion, anticipating trends and proposing a stylistic language based on wearability, identity, and casual elegance.
Over the decades, 'Sugar' has established itself well beyond the city limits, becoming a nationally and internationally recognized concept store, a meeting place for clothing, accessories, art, and design. Since 2018, the brand has been headquartered in the historic Palazzo Lambardi on Corso Italia, where the building's renovation has intertwined historic architecture with a contemporary vision.
A project that fully reflects Angiolini's sensibility, for whom fashion was not merely commerce, but a cultural expression and aesthetic experience. A pioneer and innovator, gifted with a keen eye for evolving tastes, Angiolini made research the hallmark of his work. His attention to beauty extended to every creative field, from fashion to art, from architecture to design, with the aim of building a constant dialogue between tradition and modernity.
He had a deep connection with his city, which he held dear and to which he dedicated numerous projects. Angiolini served as artistic director for several initiatives, offering his expertise, vision, and relationships developed internationally. He also made a valuable contribution to the goldsmith district, where he served as artistic director of Arezzo Oro, working to enhance one of the most representative sectors of the local economy. His role at the helm of Camera Buyer Italia, the organization that brings together the leading Italian fashion buyers, was of national importance. After serving as its acting president, he became its honorary president, confirming the recognition he had earned in the industry. His expertise also landed him on television talk shows, especially at major entertainment events such as the Sanremo Music Festival, where he was called upon to comment on the clothing choices and public image of the stars. This provided a privileged vantage point from which to explore the transformations of costume and interpret the relationship between style, personality, and communication.
His passion for Arezzo had driven him, last spring, to become involved in the local government, running for mayor in the upcoming municipal elections. This project stemmed from a desire to contribute to the city's future, putting his experience, intelligence, and planning skills at the service of the community. The initiative didn't achieve the desired outcome, but it did portray a man willing to personally put himself on the line for what he believed in.
In addition to his public and professional career, Angiolini cultivated friendships and collaborations with numerous figures in fashion and culture. He had a strong bond with designer Ermanno Scervino; his collaboration with Franco Marinoni and Confcommercio was also long-standing and fruitful. Many of the artists and industry professionals who frequented Sugar had been involved in initiatives and events in Arezzo over the years, contributing to the city's international profile.
What made him a special figure, in addition to his entrepreneurial achievements, were his human traits: respect for others, sensitivity in relationships, generosity, and the ability to maintain a humble attitude even after reaching a position of great authority.
