(Adnkronos) –
Weather changes across Italy: the anticyclone retreats and widespread rain arrives, with accumulations of up to 50 mm in Liguria, Tuscany, and Piedmont. Starting Sunday, October 18th, an Atlantic disturbance will bring progressively worsening conditions, destined to extend across much of the country in the coming week. Temperatures are also expected to drop, with persistent rainfall expected until Friday, October 23rd.
Here are the forecasts and the most affected regions.
Lorenzo Tedici, meteorologist and media manager for iLMeteo.it, confirms the return of frequent precipitation, starting in the northwestern regions. Over the next few hours, cloud cover will become more irregular, with more significant accumulations between Lower Calabria and Sicily, where light showers are possible.
Starting Saturday evening, an unstable nucleus descending from the North Sea will reach France, causing a simultaneous increase in instability in western Italy and the persistence of weak phenomena in the same southern sectors.
Sunday 18 October will be characterised by widespread rainfall, with estimated accumulations of up to 40-50 mm/24 hours in Liguria, Tuscany and Piedmont.
Further rain will affect the Ionian coast of Reggio Calabria and the southern parts of Sicily and Sardinia. During the day, the rain will extend to Lombardy, Emilia, and the Lazio coast; the rest of the country will remain cloudy but mostly dry.
The entry of Atlantic disturbances will occur through complex pressure dynamics. The high-pressure system will decline due to the entry of the northern European disturbance core. This core, fed by cooler air aloft, will initially move westward (a dynamic known as retrograde motion in meteorology) toward northern Spain. Subsequently, the structure will reverse its trajectory eastward, opening a wide, humid and unstable corridor from the Atlantic Ocean to Italy.
The new week will be marked by widespread precipitation, initially concentrated on the western side and, starting Tuesday, spreading to the rest of the country, with occasional rainfall lasting at least until Friday, October 23. At the same time, temperatures will generally decrease, returning to the seasonal average, typically between 18 and 21°C across much of the country.
This rainfall pattern will help mitigate the water deficit, particularly in the Piedmont basins, which have been experiencing a moderate drought for approximately 6-12 months, as reported by the Drought Observatory of the National Research Council (CNR) and Arpa Piemonte.
