The accident occurred on October 29, when a CH-47 military helicopter crashed, killing the four soldiers and injuring 11 others. Sergeant Simone Ruggia (Army Aviation – Aves), Sergeant Claudio Marchesi (Army Aviation – Aves), Lieutenant Franco Adriano Zecchillo of the Italian Red Cross Volunteer Military Corps, and Sergeant Laura Procacci of the Italian Red Cross Volunteer Military Corps, lost their lives.

The military prosecutor's office in Rome has also opened an investigation. Currently, the investigation by the military prosecutor's office, led by Marco De Paolis, is pending the outcome of the investigation.

Following the tragedy, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto traveled to Bosnia-Herzegovina, accompanied by the Chief of Defense Staff, General Luciano Portolano, and a team of doctors, to pay tribute to the fallen and convey the closeness and affection of the Defense Ministry and the entire country to the wounded.

"Simone, Claudio, Franco Adriano, Laura. Four lives lost while serving Italy. Today my thoughts are with them and with those who love them," Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on social media the day after the fatal accident and after laying a bouquet of roses at the Circus Maximus to pay tribute to the four soldiers. "We wanted the Defense Village, set up in preparation for November 4th, to become a place of remembrance open to all. A place where every Italian can bring a flower, leave a thought, pause in silence. And let the families of our fallen feel the closeness of an entire nation," the Prime Minister said.

"I know that no words can fill such a profound absence. But being here is a duty. To embrace those who suffer, to cherish the memory of those we have lost, to accompany the injured and their loved ones in these difficult hours. To those who wish to come to the Circus Maximus, I ask a simple gesture: bring a flower. In that flower will be your affection, your respect, and Italy's thanks. Simone, Claudio, Franco Adriano, Laura: we will not forget you," Meloni concluded.
