(Adnkronos) – The new week begins with an orange weather alert for two regions and a yellow one for five others. A low pressure area, moving from the Balkans toward the Tyrrhenian Sea, is causing unstable conditions in central and southern Italy, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Today, Monday, November 2nd, the deepening of the low pressure system over the southern Tyrrhenian Sea will cause a marked deterioration in the central Adriatic coast and much of the South, with widespread precipitation, including heavy thunderstorms, combined with a general intensification of winds.
Based on available forecasts, the Department of Civil Protection, in consultation with the affected regions, which are responsible for activating civil protection systems in the affected areas, has issued a new severe weather warning. These weather events, impacting various areas of the country, could lead to hydrogeological and hydraulic problems.
The warning calls for scattered to widespread rainfall, including showers or thunderstorms, from the early hours of today across Abruzzo, Molise, and Sicily, extending to Campania, Calabria, Puglia, and Basilicata, with persistent rainfall in the latter and along the eastern Apennine slopes of Abruzzo and Molise.
These phenomena will be accompanied by heavy showers, strong wind gusts, localized hailstorms, and frequent electrical activity. Furthermore, starting early this morning, strong to gale-force northerly winds are expected across Lazio, especially the northern regions, Campania, and Sicily, with strong gale-force gusts across the southern parts of the island, subsequently extending and rotating from the east across Basilicata and Puglia.
Based on forecasted events, an orange alert has been issued for meteorological and hydrogeological risk for Puglia and Basilicata today. A yellow alert has been issued for Calabria, Campania, Molise, Abruzzo, and Sicily.
Due to forecasts of heavy rainfall, some municipalities in Puglia have imposed various restrictions, including school closures in some cases. Schools are closed, for example, in San Severo, in the province of Foggia, in Lecce, and in Brindisi. In Barletta, urban and suburban roads and city underpasses will be monitored, as they "could be affected by flooding due to the heavy rainfall. If this occurs, they will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic."
The Municipality of Lecce has ordered the closure, for the duration of the alert, of the municipal cemetery, the municipal villa, the parks of Belloluogo, Galateo, and Cave, and the Santa Rosa Luigi Montefusco sports field. The markets on Via Bari and Piazza Libertini are also suspended. The Municipal Operations Center has been activated to coordinate Civil Protection interventions and monitor risk situations in the area, with particular attention to the Torre Chianca area and the mouth of the Idume River Basin. Residents have been advised to "limit unnecessary travel, avoid parks and tree-lined areas, avoid flooded underpasses, and exercise extreme caution during storms." Schools, parks, gardens, municipal villas, and municipal cemeteries are also closed in Brindisi "due to a critical situation warning regarding hydrogeological and hydraulic risks and adverse weather events."
