(Adnkronos) – "I am perfectly aware that our support for Ukraine may come at a political cost, that there may be a segment of our electorate that disagrees, but I have no intention of changing my position." So writes Giorgia Meloni in Bruno Vespa's book "History of the Second Republic. From Berlusconi to Meloni, from Prodi to Schlein," to be released Monday, November 2, by Mondadori-Rai Libri.
The Prime Minister says: “Because I don't support Ukraine simply for the Ukrainians.
I'm doing this for Italy. An international context in which only the militarily strongest rule prevails is not in our nation's best interests. This isn't a political opinion; it's a fact. If we had allowed Ukraine to be easily conquered, are we sure Moscow would have stopped instead of moving forward, as has already happened in the past? And if it had attacked a NATO country, what would we have done, given that NATO countries have a mutual defense commitment? Would we have started a war or, more simply, would we have marked the end of the Atlantic Alliance, which guaranteed peace and prosperity to Western Europe while Eastern Europe lived in poverty and oppression under the Soviet yoke? I support Ukraine because all other scenarios are potentially more terrifying.
"I believe it was a right and proper choice, in defense of a nation under attack and of an international order that cannot accept the rule of the strongest and wars of aggression," the prime minister continued. "The heroic resistance of the Ukrainians, with the fundamental support of the West, I believe has demonstrated even to skeptics that there is a people there, a history, an identity that does not want to be crushed.
I would call it patriotism and, as a right-wing woman, I can only admire it."
On the domestic political front, when asked why she doesn't intend to ally herself with Vannacci, the prime minister replies: "I want to ask Italians to continue governing without blackmail. I wasn't open to blackmail before, I haven't allowed myself to be blackmailed during these years in government, and I don't intend to be blackmailed tomorrow."
"I want to return to government, and I want to do so with the center-right we know, enriched by new civic movements that are emerging and can strengthen our political platform," the Prime Minister continued. "The Honorable Vannacci was deputy secretary of the League and chose to abandon the League and, therefore, the center-right. So did the parliamentarians who followed him, all elected with the center-right, betraying their electoral mandate and choosing to side with the opposition, now consistently voting against the government alongside Conte and Schlein, Renzi and Fratoianni. A 'very broad field,' where very often even the arguments are similar."
"National Future has a stated goal: to defeat the first prime minister the Italian right has ever elected. And if this government loses, the left will govern. A party founded for this can call itself whatever it wants, but it is not right-wing," Meloni concludes.
