Mathilde Arcel, the lead actress in May el-Toukhy's "Woman Unknown," won the Coppa Volpi for women at the Venice Film Festival. John Malkovich, the lead actress in Martin McDonagh's "Wild Horse Nine," won the Coppa Volpi for men. The jury for the main competition at the Venice Film Festival, chaired by Maggie Gyllenhaal and composed of Kaouther Ben Hania, Daniel Blumberg, Francesco Casetti, Xavier Giannoli, Shahrbanoo Sadat, and Johnnie To, made the decision.
"I dedicate this award to the thousands of women who have suffered and lived the experience we recount in this film," Arcel began. He then thanked director May el-Toukhy "for refusing to compromise and for having the courage to tell this story." Arcel said he was "extremely excited" about his "first leading role," which "wasn't easy to play."
The Silver Lion for Best Director at Venice Film Festival 83 went to director Ilya Khrzhanovsky for his film 'Dau'.
Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor's 'Naza' won the Special Jury Prize at Venice Film Festival.
The Best Screenplay Award at Venice Film Festival 83 went to director and screenwriter Stéphane Brizé and screenwriters Coralie Amédéo and Olivier Gorce for their film 'Un Bon Petit Soldat', which Brizé also directed.
Tommaso Landucci and Damiano Femfert won the Orizzonti Award for Best Screenplay for the film "Children of the Monkey," directed by Landucci.
The Orizzonti jury, chaired by Valérie Donzelli and composed of Peter Becker, Elizabeth Lo, David Pablos, and Barbara Ronchi, made the decision. Lead actor Riccardo Scamarcio received the award for Best Actor in the Orizzonti section of the 83 Venice Film Festival. "I'm truly thrilled; it's an honor for me to be here. I dedicate this award to all the fathers in the world, including mine and my mother," said Scamarcio. "I share this award with a young actor making his debut: Andrea Aggio, who plays my son in the film."
The Orizzonti Award for Best Actress went to Laleh Marzban, the protagonist of Mohsen Gharaei's "Falling House": "I dedicate this award to the women of Iran, who have paid the highest price for even the smallest form of freedom. Yet they continue to pursue their dreams with hope and courage. One day our dream will come true for our people."
The Marcello Mastroianni Award, dedicated to an emerging young actress, was awarded to Malou Khebizi, the 23-year-old actress from the film '15/18 (A Place to Heal)' by Cédric Kahn.
