(Adnkronos) – In 2025, A2A generated approximately €45 million in value in the region, up 14% compared to the previous year. This is what emerges from the fifth edition of the Calabria Territorial Sustainability Report, which reports on the Group's environmental, economic, and social performance in 2025 and its business plans for the coming years. The report was presented today by A2A Chairman Roberto Tasca and Group CEO Renato Mazzoncini.
“Contributing to the development of local areas means knowing how to listen to and support local businesses and communities.
The dialogue with our stakeholders, which we have continuously promoted for years, stems from a conviction: only through dialogue is it possible to build projects that generate value for the community and for future generations. Alongside our industrial presence, we combine a concrete commitment to people, with training and inclusion initiatives,” stated Roberto Tasca, President of A2A. “In Calabria, by 2025, our educational activities had reached approximately 10 students and teachers, offering young people tools to understand environmental and energy challenges.
Through Banco dell'Energia, we have also supported 200 vulnerable families with targeted interventions: from bill payments to energy efficiency projects and education on responsible energy use. These are two distinct but complementary areas, demonstrating our commitment to achieving an ecological transition that also takes into account the social dimension.
Calabria plays a strategic role for A2A, as demonstrated by the approximately 400 million euros of investments planned in the 2035 Industrial Plan, including over 140 million euros earmarked for the Crotone circular economy hub.
In 2025 alone, we invested €19,4 million in plants and infrastructure for the ecological transition and generated €45 million in economic value in the region, a 14% increase over the previous year,” said Renato Mazzoncini, CEO of A2A. “Our commitment also extends to the local business community: orders awarded to micro and small businesses reached €16,8 million out of a total of €18 million, a 140% increase over 2024. We believe in innovation as a lever for more efficient and sustainable plant management. In Calabria, where hydroelectricity is central to renewable energy production, new technologies can further enhance this resource. One example is the Teti Project, a trial based on an underwater robot capable of removing sediment from reservoirs without emptying them, which could also be applied in the Sila basins.”
In 2025, the Group generated approximately €45 million in value in the region, a 14% increase over the previous year. This contribution is also reflected in the local business community: orders to suppliers reached €18 million, a 33% increase over 2024. The increase in orders from micro and small businesses with fewer than 50 employees was particularly significant, reaching €16,8 million, a 140% increase. This contribution to the local economy is complemented by investments in the construction and modernization of infrastructure. Over the course of the year, €19,4 million was invested in Calabria, €12 million of which was allocated to extraordinary maintenance of hydroelectric plants and the development of renewables, and €7 million to the circular economy, for projects at the Crotone hub.
A2A's presence in the region currently extends from energy generation and sales to waste treatment and waste-to-energy, from public lighting to smart city services. In 2025, this presence expanded further, with the entry into the integrated water cycle through Novito Acque, the operational management of purification plants and sewerage networks in seven municipalities in the Locride area (serving 50 residents), and the launch of electric mobility services. A key role is played by the hydroelectric complex managed by the Group, which comprises 10 power plants with 563,2 MW of installed capacity. In 2025, 415 GWh of energy were produced, avoiding the emission of 177 tons of CO.
Alongside energy generation, the innovation process applied to plant management continues: following its presentation at the Cancano Dam in Valtellina, Teti, the underwater robot developed to autonomously remove sediment from reservoirs without the need for emptying, is currently being tested to assess its extension to the Group's hydroelectric plants. In Calabria, Lidar cameras were also used for digital asset reconstruction, and the Urban Beekeeping project continued at the Poverella and Passante dams, where 240 bees contribute to environmental biomonitoring.
At the same time, the Group is working to develop renewable energy generation in the region. In 2025, authorization was obtained for an 8 MW photovoltaic plant in Cutro, followed by a second with the same capacity in the same municipality in 2026. Three agrivoltaic plants with a total capacity of over 260 MW are also under consideration in the provinces of Crotone and Cosenza, while the authorization process has begun for a 95 MW BESS energy storage system in Maida and a 24 MW wind farm in the province of Cosenza. At the Crotone circular economy hub, the waste-to-energy plant treated approximately 33 tons of waste, producing 6,5 GWh of net electricity, equivalent to the needs of 2.400 families. Work continues, from the modernization of the liquid treatment plant to the construction of the pre-treatment area for the inertization process, and the expansion of the intake network to further improve the emissions reduction system. Overall, A2A has earmarked more than €140 million in investments in the Crotone site in its Business Plan.
Infrastructure innovation proceeds alongside the development of people's skills. In 2025, operating personnel at Calabrian hydroelectric plants were involved in upskilling programs, with technical and cross-disciplinary modules dedicated to digitalization and the use of advanced tools. In 2025, A2A also renewed its commitment to younger generations, involving approximately 10 students and teachers in educational initiatives implemented locally. Among the activities offered are "Futuro in Circolo," now in its third edition and dedicated to biodiversity, and school-to-work training, a 40-hour online program designed to introduce students to the topics of energy and sustainability and career guidance.
Supporting the most vulnerable is another pillar of the Group's local efforts, which translates into concrete initiatives to combat energy poverty and promote social inclusion. This includes the projects promoted by the Energy Bank in 2025 in various areas of Calabria, with a total allocation of over €100 aimed at helping over 200 families.
